Abstract
Both overpopulation and extinction would be the (extreme) results of moving away from that equilibrium point in which the population reproduces enough to guarantee its 'replacement': it neither grows nor decreases, but keeps the number of individuals stable by replacing those who die with those who are born. In the past, there was high concern about overpopulation and the goal was greater birth control. However, at least in Europe, things have changed. To the concern of many, fertility rates in some countries are below 2 children per woman. In addition, the demographic explosion of the world human population had nothing to do with an increase in births, but rather with a higher life span. In this article, Sol Minoldo discusses real-life examples that highlight the underlying complexity of the attempts to keep this population replacement rate constant.
