IMBS Class 2017-19 Application Now Open

The International Master in Biomedical Sciences (IMBS) is pleased to announce that the application for the class 2017-2019 is now open. The IMBS program was established in 2008 as a joint program between the School of Medicine of Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg (ALU), Germany, and the Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy and Biochemistry of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), Argentina. The aim of this program is to train prospective researchers in scientific knowledge and state-of-the-art experimental experience in current and emerging biomedical research areas with a focus on translational research and development. It is also meant to foster teaching and research cooperation between the two Universities and to contribute to the cultural exchange on the master, PhD, and academic levels. Since 2008, over 80 students have successfully completed the innovative IMBS program, 75% of the graduates continued with their PhD education in Germany, Argentina, or elsewhere, while 25% successfully applied to positions at a university or in industry. The program consists of a two-year master course, carried out at UBA and ALU, finishing with a master thesis defense and a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree from UBA. The theoretical and practical modules at both universities have been stepwise adapted to meet both the specific needs of the participants and the official requirements of the Universities. In 2013, the IMBS awarded an additional degree from ALU, the Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS), for the successful completion of 5-months and 8-module Summer School training amounting to 30 Credit Points (cps) in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Another milestone was achieved in 2014 when the IMBS program was accredited by the National Commission for University Evaluation and Accreditation (CONEAU) with the best possible rating A. The following goal will be to award the M.Sc. in Biomedicine degree also from the ALU School of Medicine (corresponding to 120 ECTS cps) yielding two M.Sc. degrees from UBA and ALU. Based on the successful cooperation between ALU and UBA, the DAAD funded the program “Subject related Partnerships with Institutions of Higher Education” aiming to expand the IMBS to a PhD program, also involving other Latin American Universities. The Trinational Education Improvement in Latin America (TREAM) program already started in January 2015 with the partnership of the Universidad de la Republica de Montevideo (UdelaR).
